5 Tips for Men Wanting to Join a Yoga Class

Inspired by Nick’s Member Spotlight interview at Pose Fitness

If you’re a guy who’s been thinking about trying yoga but feels unsure, intimidated, or just plain confused about what to expect, you’re not alone. While more men are turning to yoga for flexibility, strength, and mental clarity, many still hesitate to join a class.

We spoke to Nick, a regular at Pose Fitness, to get the inside scoop on his yoga journey and what he wishes more men knew before stepping onto the mat.

Whether you’re a total beginner or just yoga-curious, here are 5 honest, helpful tips from someone who's been there.

1. Forget Flexibility. It’s Not a Prerequisite

“Don’t worry about flexibility. It’s not about flexibility. You will become more flexible the more you do it.”

A common misconception is that you need to be flexible before starting yoga. Nick busts this myth straight away. When he first joined, he was a runner with tight hamstrings and calves, and flexibility wasn’t his strong suit.

Over time, though, that changed. The regular practice helped him unlock movement and mobility he didn’t know was possible.

His advice is simple: start where you are and trust that your body will open up as you go. Flexibility is the result, not the requirement.

2. It’s Not About Anyone Else, It’s About You

“Yoga is not a practice about looking at what other people are doing. It’s a practice of turning inward.”

One of the biggest mental blocks for men is the fear of being judged, especially when entering a space that might feel unfamiliar. But as Nick correctly highlights, yoga is one of the least judgmental environments you can step into.

Nobody’s watching you. Everyone is focused on their own breath, movement, and personal progress. Whether you wobble in a pose or need a break, there’s no pressure to perform. Yoga invites you to tune into yourself, rather than comparing yourself to others.

“I'm not looking at anybody else during class. Nobody else is looking at me.”

Let go of the idea that you need to ‘do it right.’ Just breathe, move, and be present.

3. Find the Right Environment

“I’ve been to some yoga studios where it’s packed in... but here at Pose, I’ve got my own space. It’s not always super serious yoga either—some classes are really fun.”

Your first experience of yoga can shape your long-term feelings about it, so choosing the right studio is crucial. For Nick, discovering Pose Fitness was a game-changer. The space felt open and welcoming, not crowded or intimidating. The teachers spoke in ways that made sense to him, especially since he was interested in meditation and energy flow.

He also found classes that matched his mood: dynamic Rocket Yoga and Mandala Vinyasa classes when he wanted to move, slower Hatha yoga classes when he needed to rest.

“There are mats, blocks, straps—everything I need is there. It’s accessible. And the vibe is welcoming.”

Look for a studio that offers a variety of class types, allows you to move at your own pace, and makes you feel at ease.

4. Give Yourself Permission to Just Try

“Don’t let it get in your head. Just go. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. Try something else.”

The stories we tell ourselves—I won’t fit in, I won’t be good at it, everyone will look at me—can stop us before we even begin. Nick’s advice to his past self (and to any guy hesitating now) is to ignore the noise and take the first step.

If you’re unsure, just try a class. Don’t worry if it feels unfamiliar at first. It’s meant to. Every expert was once a beginner.

And remember: yoga isn’t about being the best in the room. It’s about showing up for yourself.

5. Enjoy the Surprising Benefits

“My upper body strength has improved. My flexibility has improved. My confidence has improved.”

Yoga isn’t just stretching on a mat. It’s a full-body, full-mind practice with benefits that ripple into your daily life. For Nick, it enhanced his meditation, helped manage his asthma, improved his strength, and even expanded his breathing capacity.

“The breathwork alone has helped my lungs—my asthma is more manageable now than ever before.”

He’s found a flow state in yoga that reminds him of running, where breath, movement, and mindfulness blend into something powerful. And beyond the physical, it’s also brought friendship and community.

“I’ve met some wonderful people—friends for life. Pose really has that community feel. It’s not intimidating. For someone who can be quite shy, I feel like I can come in and just be myself.”

Ready To Go?

If you're a man who's been curious about yoga but held back for any reason, this is your sign. You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to know the poses. You just need a willingness to try.

Like Nick says, don’t let it get in your head.

Take the first step, and let the rest unfold.
